Like other Cuban-derived hip hop bands, such as the hugely popular, Paris-based Orishas, Convoy Cubano infuses the traditional rhythms of Cuban son with engaging hip hop lyrics. Although their live performances rely heavily on samples, the pieces are ultimately driven by the wordplay of Alvarez and Diaz as well as two live percussionists.

Convoy Cubano is part of a new generation of Cuban musicians scattered world-wide that draws on its ancestral melodies and rhythms and incorporates the styles of their adopted countries. In the case of Convoy's Neiver Alvarez, it was an exploration of North American commercial music that lead him back to his Cuban musical roots.

Alvaraz describes his experience of hip hop in Cuba: "I come from a neighbourhood in Cuba that faced Miami, and on the radio all we would hear was hiphop….That's what everyone of my generation was listening to. I never really heard much of the traditional Cuban music -- the son and the guajira -- until I moved to Canada."
