PURIM CABARET & "JEWISH MARDI GRAS" MASQUERADE

This Sunday, Toronto Jazz/World musician David Buchbinder (just nominated for his fourth JUNO) and bellydance queen and actor Roula Said (recently featured in the film Sabah) present their very wild, very downtown Middle Eastern flavoured Purim Cabaret.

It will be a night full of colour, revelry, humour and performance, which will be put over the top by the pleasure of participation (yours!). Featuring musicians, Dave Wall, Arab-Jewish-Jazz fusion band Medina, Ernie Tollar, Rick Shadrach Lazar and Geoff Young, bellydance by Roula, Hannan, and Loana, spoken word, theatrics and puppetry.

David & Roula’s Purim Cabaret will also feature dance contests, participatory processionals, crossdressing bellydancers and much more.

On March 14 the Toronto Women's Book Store and Women's Press present D'bi Young's Art on Black Book Lauch. The evening will eaturing Lillian Allen, Anita Stewart, dubbin.revolushun.gangstars and dj soulsistah. Art on black is a must-read for fans of dub poetry, feminist poetry, and post-colonial poetic forms – all dynamic parts of the global cultural landscape and Canada’s cultural discourse.

GARY TOPP brings it all to Lula. Astor Piazzolla fans won't want to miss acclaimed violinist and composer Helmut Lipsky & Berlin's L’Art de Passage on March 23 and 24. And the following week, Topp brings to Lula the UK's most influential art-rock band Audience followed just two nights later by Blowfly, the original X-rated rapper.

Toronto’s first Latin Sextet — formed in 1997 with the aim of reviving the 1970s "old-school salsa" sounds of such legendary musicians as Joe Cuba y su Sexteto, Jimmy Sabater and Cal Tjader. Mora Sextet broke new ground and built the foundation for Toronto’s well known groups Vibrason, and Caché.

In response to numerous requests from faithful Mora fans, Wilson Montoya Acevedo – the founder, musical director and multi-percussionist of the original Mora Sextet — decided to reform the band. This rebirth of the Mora Sextet promises to be as exciting and creatively influential as the the band’s first incarnation.

The inimitable Mora Sextet is comprised of six accomplished, classically trained musicians: Randy Stirtzinger (Vibes), Sean Bellaviti (Piano), Yoser Rodriguez (Baby Bass), Luis Ariel Rey (Congas), Juan Carlos Cardenas (Vocals/Guiro) and Wilson Acevedo (Bongos).

As a courtesy to our loyal patrons, we have printed some Saturday Lula cards so that the Lula faithful can continue to enjoy $10 Saturday admission through to the end of the summer.

If you would like to pick up one of these cards, please come to Lula any evening in March and ask the host or door person for your Saturday discount card.

Lula Members will continue to pay $10 for the duration of their membership year.
