LULA HIGHLIGHTS

You'll often hear us bragging that we've got bands coming to us direct from Cuba or Brazil. This Friday night, ComPosition presents an amazing 9-piece salsa band visiting us direct from Richmond, Virginia. The music of Bio Ritmo Salsa Machine is s proudly rooted in the great Afro-Cuban & Puerto Rican salsa traditions. Their vision is to remain true to their rhythmic foundation, while contributing to the evolution of salsa through skillful layering of jazz, urban, electronic and global sonic influences. The band has been playing together for 15 years and has released four critically-acclaimed full-length albums. Their next album, produced by the legendary multiple-Grammy winner Jon Fausty, is slated for release in early 2007.

Salsa fans are in for a special treat on the 29th of this month when Lady Son and Articulo Veinte - lead by the powerful vocalist Yeti Ajasin - play their first Lula Salsa Saturday. Influenced by the great singers of salsa, Celia Cruz, Ibrahim Ferrer, Oscar D'Leon, Hector Lovoe and Eliadas Ochoa, Lady Son brings a fresh female essence to Toronto's salsa society. Funky base lines, adventurous trumpet, keyboard and violins backed up by hard core salsa percussion create a unique energy when combined with the Yeti's strong and assured vocals. In just four years since opening its doors in the world’s most multicultural city, Lula Lounge has become one of Toronto's most important destinations for authentic global music and cultural experience. From May 3 to 14, the spirit of Lula will be on brilliant display as dozens of artists from a vast array of genres and disciplines, as well as culture-seekers from an equally broad spectrum of communities gather for Lula World 2006.

Over these 12 days, most every corner of the globe will be musically represented – by Juno winners, community favourites and rising stars alike – in the finest acoustic setting. All are invited to start the evening with a superb tropical fusion meal from Lula's renowned kitchen, and to participate in dance classes with expert instructors on the evenings where they are offered.
