"McNicolls is a dancesmith whose movement vocabulary conveys many layers of meaning."
~ Paula Citron
For more info please read Susan Walker's article in last Thursday's Toronto Star What's On
Under the direction of Miko Sobriera, McNicolls incorporates the physical site of the performance (Lula Lounge) to draw the audience into his world of characters -- each exploring some aspect of himself -- as he navigates the pain of childhood memories and the complexity of aspiration and desire. The young but extremely tight trio composed of musical director Nathan Dell Vandenberg, Lucas Julien and Ben Harney provides an evocative musical landscape for the journey that McNicolls leads us through.
A small but attentive audience was thrilled by the opening night performance of Toronto-based artist Learie McNicolls at Lula Lounge Sunday July 9. In his new one man production Underworld 7, McNicolls presents a stunning blend of movement, music, and dub poetry to explore complex issues of personal, family and cultural history, mortality, mythology and love.

A musically diverse night of featuring the Lisbon-based Cape Verdean vocalist Carmen Souza, Brazilian singer Luanda Jones and Guiomar Campbell's Parabolica. A fundraiser for the proposed Dundas West BIA.
Luanda Jones
Luanda has been singing and composing professionally for more than ten years. Born into a musical family, she has lived and breathed music from a very early age, sharing her home with a veteran rocker in father Luis Moreno, and mother Irinéa Maria, a composer of bossa nova. Luanda will
treat us not only her own original compositions, but also to a few MPB classics by the likes of Tom Jobim, Gilberto Gil, Jorge Benjor, Caetano Veloso and Carmem Miranda interpreted with her own unique flair.
Guiomar Campbell's Parabolica
Singer and percussionist Guiomar Campbell, is a native of Minas Gerais, Brazil, and has been performing in Toronto since 1978 in various Brazilian as well as Cuban, South African, and World percussion ensembles.
Guiomar leads the band "Parabolica", Toronto based musical group built on a strong foundation of Afro-Brazilian Folk rhythms, bossa nova, samba, forro, played with a jazz sensibility. Their high energy show ranges from Brazilian folkloric music, to popular samba medleys, to jazz and funk -inspired original compositions.
She also performs with various groups in town including Jazzadelics, Alchemistas, samba squad and leads Kids and adults
workshops in samba drumming and dancing.
The group’s name is a Portuguese word derived from the word parabola, a geometric curve found in various forms throughout nature and the universe. It also commonly referred to a TV satellite dish in Brazil.
Carmen Souza
Hot on the heels of her Canadian debut at Afrofest, CARMEN SOUZA, brings her unique take on traditional Cape Verdean beats like Batuku, Kola San Djon, Morna, Funana, Coladeira and other African musics. Her warm vocals and jazzy arrangements take the tradition in a more contemporary direction. She is accompanied by Theo Pas'cal, her producer and composer of her songs, one of Portugal's greatest Afro/jazz bass players, also playing bass drums, Paulo Sérgio on piano and Orlanda Guilande on backing vocals and percussion, with Rick Lazar on percussion.

~ The Washington Post
"Who says there's nothing new under the salsa sun? Bio Ritmo's latest album turns out to be the group's most experimental yet - even as it ostensibly cleaves to salsa classica."
~ The Village Voice, NYC
After the huge success of their tour last spring, Bio Ritmo returns to Lula Lounge for two nights with their red-hot "rhythm of life". With its infectious band personality and character and experimental vibe, Bio Ritmo Salsa Machine is one of those exceptionally rare salsa bands who make both traditional and experimental salsa lovers smile and dance, inspiring new fans of the music wherever they play.
